Amazon rolls out its first checkout-free location outside of Seattle.
Chicago’s first Amazon Go location opened its doors on Monday, Sept. 17. The new automated, cashier-less store located at 113 S. Franklin St. in the heart of downtown Chicago, is the first Amazon Go location outside of Seattle.
ABC7News reported that the store offers a range of foods from snacks to fresh food and meal kits.
Customers scan an Amazon Go app to enter, choose their items and just walk out of the store. The items are billed to their credit card, and they receive a receipt on their phone once they exit. This is all made possible by machine learning technology, i.e. ceiling cameras that monitor customer selection.
MDRetail analyst David Weiss told ABC7News that the technology Amazon is using will be scaleable to hundreds of locations in six to 24 months, which means Amazon could be able to bring the technology to its Whole Foods locations in the near future.
